Public Art Collection
|
The Edmonds Arts Commission oversees the acquisition, maintenance and display of Public Art for the City. Acquisition of artwork is funded through the One Percent for Art ordinance, donations, and gifts. The One Percent for Art ordinance was established in 1976 and the art fund receives 1% of the cost of municipal capital construction projects funded by the City. The City Collection contains work by eminent Northwest artists including Guy Anderson, Tony Angell, Robert Cooke, Everett DuPen, Georgia Gerber, William Morris, Buster Simpson, and Michelle VanSlyke. The Edmonds Arts Commission and City cultural staff define a site or project for Public Art. The selection process includes a jury of artists, community members and one commissioner formed to review artist applications and select the finalists. For works totaling more than $5000, the prospectus is approved by City Council and the community is invited to a public meeting to gather input. The jury’s final selection is presented at a City Council meeting for a public hearing and council approval.
