Birds Are Awesome!

(Grades K-6)

Find out what makes the birds of the Pacific Northwest so awesome! a Bird Naturalist from Edmonds Discovery Programs is available for classroom visits (K-6) throughout the school year.

This one hour program includes a PowerPoint slide presentation and age-appropriate, hands-on activity. The presentation will include the basics of bird anatomy, migration, habits, nests, foods and foraging. Students will also learn about several common, local species of birds and the perils they face in an urban environment.

Spring Break Discovery Days (Ages 6-12)

Wondering what your child can do during Spring break for the Edmonds School District? Enroll them in Discovery Days! A week-long environmental learning camp taught by Discovery Programs Ranger-Naturalists. Each day's activities, crafts and outdoor programs are built around a theme, and include a walk to a park.

Some of our themes are: Forest Friends, Birds & Bats, Beautiful Bugs, Weird Wildlife, and Tidepool Treasures.

Bring a sack lunch, water, backpack, sturdy shoes, hat and rain gear. Register for one day, or all week!

Preregistration is Required. Class time - 5 hours per day.

 Discovery Days

 

Junior Beach Rangers (Ages 7-10)

5 days in July of activities, games, and crafts aimed at encouraging exploration of the seashore environment. Learn about tides, tidepool animals, seaweed, and birds of the seashore.

A schedule of locations for the week's activities will be mailed to participants prior to the first class. Bring a sack lunch, water, backpack, sturdy shoes, hat and rain gear. Class time - 3 hours per day.

Jr. Beach Rangers

 

Junior Naturalists (Ages 9-12)

Meet at various Edmonds parks and beaches for a week in August for outdoor activities, such as tidepooling, animal tracking, stream and wetland investigations, games and crafts.

A schedule of locations for the week's activities will be mailed to participants prior to the first class. Bring a sack lunch, water, backpack, sturdy shoes, hat and rain gear. Class time - 5 hours per day.

Beach Ranger Birthday Parties (Ages 4 - 7)

If your child has a Summer birthday and you're planning a party at the beach, why not invite a Beach Ranger-Naturalist? You bring the kids, food and gifts, and we'll bring the games and activities to introduce the young partygoers to the wonderful world of sea life. Call (425) 771-0227 for fees or to reserve a Beach Ranger-Naturalist for a 30-40 minute visit to your birthday party.

Public Beach Walks!

Ranger-Naturalist guided public beach walks are offered FREE of charge many days during the summer.

Learn more about our local intertidal community! Walks coincide with low-tides and run approximately one hour, rain or shine.

Starlight Beach Walk (Winter)

Join our Ranger-Naturalists and WSU Snohomish County Beach Watchers for a low tide beach walk under the stars. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather on this wintery evening. Meet at the Olympic Beach Visitor Station.

We'll explore the beach as the tide goes out and then return to the Visitor Station for some hot chocolate to take the chill off!

Watershed Fun Fair - FREE (Spring)

April 24th 2010

11a.m. - 4p.m.

This popular family event is returning to Yost Park!

Kids will enjoy nature crafts and storytelling in the giant turtle tent.  There will be displays and information about backyard wildlife habitat as well as recycling, energy and water conservation, and other environmental topics.

Take a guided walk with a Ranger-Naturalist or try our self-guided “Yost Park Quest” or “The Watershed Mystery Tour”.

Bring a picnic lunch, and enjoy the park trails and playground. Yost Park is located at 9535 Bowdoin Way.

Earth Day - Spring Beach Cleanup

Help remove litter from the shoreline of the Edmonds Marine Sanctuary! Meet at the Olympic Beach Visitor Station. Wear your gloves and boots, we will provide the bags.

Individuals of all ages and groups are welcome to participate. No registration is necessary. FREE

Puget Sound Bird Fest

(September 10 - 12, 2010)

Puget Sound Bird Fest is a celebration of birds and nature. Our mission is to increase awareness of species of birds that spend all or part of their lives in the Puget Sound region, and especially the environs of Edmonds. Residents and visitors will have opportunities to observe birds in their native habitats, and learn about ways in which habitat for birds and other wildlife can be preserved and restored in urban and suburban areas. There is something for everyone at Puget Sound Bird Fest.
