This month the Hazel Miller Foundation awarded the Edmonds Sister City Commission a grant to partially fund some of the cultural and community events of the 25th anniversary celebration of the City's sister city relationship with Hekinan, Japan. This financial award will provide much needed assistance to the Edmonds community in hosting the Japanese delegation during their stay from October 29th through November 4th, 2013.
The Edmonds Sister City Commission anticipates that nearly forty citizens of Hekinan will travel with their delegation this autumn, and continues to explore creative ways the community can participate in hosting our Japanese friends. "This will be a big help towards making this important anniversary celebration a success," says Edmonds Sister City Commission Chair Michelle Van Tassell, "this is a big cultural event for our community and we are delighted that the Hazel Miller Foundation was so willing to support our efforts. But even so, we still have a good way to go if we are going to be able to return the generosity they showed our delegation."
In April, Mayor Dave Earling led a delegation of Edmonds citizens to Hekinan in celebration of the two cities' quarter century anniversary of their sister city relationship. The Edmonds Sister City Commission encourages citizens interested in supporting the anniversary celebrations to reach out with support. "This is truly a community effort," says Mayor Earling, "caring for our friends and visitors is a core value here in Edmonds."
