Come read along with Penny's adventures in Puget Sound in this new reading primer for 1st through 3rd grade. In the first story follow Penny as she learns about the tides and proper beach etiquette.

Marine Education K-12

The two-part Marine Education program is our most widely known, and visible program. During the first part, a Ranger-Naturalist's one hour classroom visit provides a fun age-appropriate introduction to the exciting world of marine biology.

Marine Education in the Classroom

Depending on the age group, classroom activities may include puppets or felt board sea creatures for the younger students, or slides and role plays for the older kids. All age groups enjoy examining the shells and other "treasures" to be found in the Ranger's specimen box.

 Meet a Moon Snail!

During the second part, students visit an Edmonds beach for a 1-hour guided low tide beach walk with a Ranger-Naturalist. This hands-on experience exposes each student to a wide variety of marine life, as well as beach etiquette.

From Moon Snails to seastars, and crabs to seaweed, this program will be one children will remember for years to come.

Our marine education program is aligned with the standards of the Washington State Science EALRs, and supports the understanding of the concepts and principles of interconnected systems. Through this program students learn to distinguish living organisms from nonliving objects, and use characteristics to sort common organisms into plant and animal groups. They will also observe life processes and cycles such as the food web in the marine environment. Perhaps most important, they will learn about the interdependence of life and how organisms interact with their environment and each other.

Registration for Marine Education programs and Spring beach walks begins in October.
